QT interval prolongation predicts cardiovascular mortality in an apparently healthy population.

Abstract: Background. In myocardial infarction patients, heart rate-adjusted QT interval (QT), an electrocardiographic indicator of sympathetic balance, is prognostic for survival.

“…In the patients with Long QT syndrome and healthy population, prolonged QT interval predicts ventricular arrhythmias and sudden death [15,16]. QT dispersion on a standard 12-lead ECG is a marker of variability of ventricular repolarization.…”

“…QTc was considered prolonged when 4440 ms, in accordance with the criteria commonly used in the literature. 5,10 QTd was calculated as maximum QT interval minus minimum QT interval in any of the leads. Since it does not depend on the heart period in the same way as the QT interval, QTd was not corrected with Bazett's formula.…”

“…8,9 Among the elderly and in healthy populations, subjects with a prolonged QTc show an increased risk for coronary heart disease and cardiac mortality. 10,11 In the Zutphen Study 12 the risk for cardiac mortality associated with a prolonged QTc increases two-to four-fold in middle-aged men and three-fold in elderly men.…”

“…A more recent analysis from the same cohort reports that prolonged QTc interval was an independent risk factor for sudden cardiac death in older adults followed for 6.7 years (72,73). QTc interval was also found to be a predictor of increased overall cardiovascular morbidity and mortality in several cohort studies (74)(75)(76)(77)(78). There is significant potential for prolonged cardiac repolarization to enhance risk stratification for sudden cardiac death among unrelated individuals in the general population and it clearly merits further evaluation.…”
