QoS provisioning in beyond 3G heterogeneous wireless systems through common radio resource management algorithms

Abstract: Beyond 3G mobile communication systems are being defined as the integration of diverse Radio Access Technologies (RATs) into what is generally known as heterogeneous wireless systems. One of the main challenges that such systems must overcome is the ability to guarantee the interoperability and efficient management of the different RATs in order to provide the user with a suitable and consistent Quality of Service (QoS) level. To this end, one of the key elements that must be considered by the network provider… Show more

“…Work by Tolli et al in [15] examined an abstract but theoretically detailed setup were an evaluation of the performance of several traffic modes was made in hierarchical network. The work by Lopez-Benitez and Gozalvez in [16] attempts to make network selection with the objective of maximizing overall throughput while minding fairness among users. Our efforts in this direction was based on recognizing the interface capabilities of terminals and their locations [17].…”

“…In terms of CRRM research, initial investigations from the authors have proposed a selection RAT algorithm, named UBReQoS algorithm [20], that intelligently distribute users among the RATs of a heterogeneous system according to the load of each RAT, the required QoS level, and the effect of a RAT selection on users already employing such RAT. In particular, the UBReQoS scheme considers three different utility functions.…”

“…Other proposals define the RAT selection process using utility functions where certain RAT performance metrics need to be maximised (e.g. [3]). Initial proposals to jointly address the RAT selection and intra-RAT RRM have also been recently published.…”
