QoS-aware Metamorphic Testing: An Elevation Case Study

Abstract: Elevators are among the oldest and most widespread transportation systems, yet their complexity increases rapidly to satisfy customization demands and to meet quality of service requirements. Verification and validation tasks in this context are costly, since they rely on the manual intervention of domain experts at some points of the process. This is mainly due to the difficulty to assess whether the elevators behave as expected in the different test scenarios, the so-called test oracle problem. Metamorphic t… Show more

“…In these cases, the system was not the dispatching algorithm but other software components of the elevators. In our previous paper, we used the technique metamorphic testing to test the dispatching algorithm of Orona, 76 showing promising results. A problem with metamorphic testing was the difficulty to extract effective metamorphic relations.…”

“…The dispatching algorithm is a critical component in a system of elevators. Indeed, a wrong assignment of calls can have a huge impact on the overall Quality of Service (QoS) [5]. Orona has developed a large corpus of dispatching algorithms, making it necessary to employ cost-effective and automated testing solutions for their verification and validation.…”

“…For each test execution, Elevate returns the values of domain specific QoS metrics (e.g., AWT, energy consumption). In our study, we considered the three QoS metrics used in our previous work [5]:…”
