QoS aware energy optimal network topology design and dynamic link power management

Abstract: To construct energy optimal Internet, a new traffic engineering concept aggregating traffic into specific links and dynamically powering off interfaces of routers/switches should be introduced. This paper proposes a network topology design algorithm and examines link power management.

“…k denotes the number of on links in the network. The depth d algorithm can calculate 50 nodes network environment in 100 sec (d = 1), 500 sec (d = 2), and 30,000 sec (d = 3) 11 . Larger depth provides more optimal topology, however the calculation time is O(k d+1 ).…”

“…"midori" is a Japanese word which means "green" in English. Under the MiDORi PCE, by monitoring the amount of traffic being transferred in the network 15 , the network topologies which include both a physical network topology and a path network topology can be dynamically reconfigured in an energy saving manner 11 . We already demonstrated the developed MiDORi Network Technologies in the Ethernet network 16 and multilayer Ethernet and all optical network 17 .…”

“…In order to reduce power consumption in the physical network, this core network introduces the MiDORi [8][9][10][11][12][13] technique. The MiDORi aggregates multiple traffic flows onto a small number of physical routes, creating highly utilized links wherever possible, and instructs the router to power-off unused interfaces whenever possible, as shown in Fig.…”

“…The virtual optical slice core network can guarantee multi Quality of Services (QoS) by adjusting elastic optical pipe bandwidth and can provide an energy efficient network by adopting the Multi-(layer, path, and resources) Dynamically Optimized Routing (MiDORi) technique [8][9][10][11][12][13], which aggregates traffic onto a small number of links and powers off the routers that are not used to convey traffic. Also, the edge nodes of the core network, called ACTION edges, monitor application Quality of Experience (QoE) and assign flows to various multi-QoS slices.…”
