QED and X-Ray Pulsars

Abstract: Techniques in QED (quantum electrodynamics) have been developed previously (see for example Melrose and Parle 1983) allowing one to treat electron-photon and photon-photon interactions exactly in the magnetized vacuum and allowing one to include the effects of a medium. These techniques are extended to include particle-particle interactions. Exact cross-sections for electron-electron collisions are derived and compared with known expressions. Such calculations have application in studies of the formation and t… Show more

“…[ 4–6 ] As seen from the studies of plasma phenomena properties, waves with small perpendicular wave numbers in weakly relativistic, thermal, and magnetized plasmas are very sensitive to the accurate evaluation of Dnestrovskii functions. [ 1–22 ] It is important to mention that basic recurrence expressions provide the accurate calculation results of the Dnestrovskii functions for the integer values of the q parameter. [ 2 ] Dnestrovskii [ 1 ] proposed an analytical method based on an expansion of Bessel functions.…”

“…The plasma dispersion functions which are reduced to Dnestrovskii functions play a significant role in plasma physics [1][2][3][4] and astrophysics. [5,6] The Dnestrovskii functions provide powerful knowledge to study several scientific fields such as the dielectric properties of magnetized plasmas, [7][8][9] cyclotron emission, relativistic effects on the laboratory plasmas, [10][11][12] magnetic mirrors, absorption, dispersion, planetary, solar flares, and stellar magnetospheres. [13][14][15] It has also been widely used in the study entitled effects of temperature anisotropy in a weakly relativistic loss cone distribution.…”

“…The specific processes of electron--electron and electron-proton scattering are of particular"interest in models for X-ray pulsars (Langer 1981; Langer and Rappaport 1982;Allen et al 1985). In these models the X rays are generated in an accretion column, where the energy supplied in the form of kinetic energy of the infalling matter is thermalised by inter-partich: collisions.…”
