Pyrolysis of Sugarcane Bagasse: The Effects of Process Parameters on the Product Yields

Abstract: The objective of the present work is to investigate the pyrolysis of sugarcane bagasse in a semi-batch reactor and study the effect of process parameters of pyrolysis on the products yield to determine optimum parameters for maximum bio-oil production. Parameters of the pyrolysis process such as temperature, particle size of sugarcane bagasse and flow rate of nitrogen (N2) have been varied as 350–600 °C, 0.25–2 mm and 100–500 cm3/min, respectively. According to the various pyrolysis conditions applied in the e… Show more

“…The fractionation or yield of the pyrolysis products is determined by the operational factors of the equipment and the nature of the biomass. The operational variables that most influence the conversion are the reactor type, biomass diameter, temperature, heating rate, process operating time, and inert gas flow [71]. Pyrolysis can be classified as slow, fast, or flash, depending on the operating variables, particularly the working time and heating rate [72].…”

“…This gives detailed information on how the reactor works. In an earlier study, 41 the monitoring and control system was tested in a fast pyrolysis reactor with sugarcane bagasse for more than 70 h of continuous operation. The fuel feeding rate may be precisely controlled, using the technology to maintain the reactor operating temperature and produce pyro gas of consistent quality.…”

“…The sample was dropped into the reactor through a screw feeder after achieving the target temperature in the reactor. The reactor was connected to a condensation system to condense and collect the bio-oil, as described in a previous study [4,5].…”

“…Similarly, the yield of bio-oil increases with the rate of heating until it reaches the maximum value, and then the effect is negligible. Biomass size is also a major parameter as smaller particles will lead to a more uniform heating [4,5].…”
