Over the years, waste recycling has been a growing concern among many nations of the world, especially in developing countries. Expanded polystyrene (EPS) is used in electrical/electronic appliances as a shock absorber and constitutes a reasonable percentage of the entire plastic waste. There are three methods of recycling expanded polystyrene: mechanical, chemical, and thermal recycling; each of the above methods gives rise to different products that are used in different applications. Expanded polystyrene is used as a binder in emulsion paint as a replacement for conventional binders; as a component of asphalt used in road construction; as a component of wood plastic composites; as a blend with silica and in concrete to produce lightweight construction material. This article studied the various applications of recycled polystyrene waste from mechanical, chemical, and thermal methods of waste recycling.

This research work is focused on the production of liquid hydrocarbon fuel from plastic waste. To perform the experiments, polypropylene waste (PPW) and polyethylene terephthalate (PETW) were selected and pyrolyzed in a semi‐batch reactor at a temperature of 500°C. Nearly 72.28 wt.% of liquid fuel was recovered from 100 g of plastic waste feed through non‐catalytic pyrolysis process. The application of catalyst GO‐Szr to the pyrolysis process increased the oil yield to 92.76 wt.%. The oil properties were studied, to assess the characteristics and to compare with that of diesel fuel. The properties of oil were found to possess very good diesel properties such as kinematic viscosity of 2.18 mm2/s, density of 790 kg/m3, cloud and pour point less than −11°C, Sulphur content less than 3 ppm and cetane number was found to be as high as 72.44. From these studies, it is highlighted that waste plastics pyrolysis is a suitable option to produce diesel‐like fuel.

Polymeric materials are increasingly present in everyday life and are discarded on a large scale constituting a challenge for its recycling. This work studied the depolymerization of expanded polystyrene (EPS) waste through microwave using carbon black as catalyst. The catalytic pyrolysis was investigated at five catalysts to polymer ratios (0.0125:1, 0.125:1, 0.25:1, 0.5:1, 1:1). The microwave assisted pyrolysis occurred at 400 W in a fixed time of 12 minutes. Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR) and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) were performed to evaluate the depolymerization. The highest yield of non-condensable gases was obtained at the ratio 0.25:1 with a gaseous yield of 53%. FTIR analysis from liquid fraction of the ratio 0.25:1 showed new absorption bands and new degradation peaks at lower temperatures were observed in thermogravimetry when compared with EPS waste. This study demonstrated the possibility of depolymerization of EPS via microwave using carbonaceous structures, which may contribute to EPS recycling.
