In this research, a series of experiments on pyrolysis of brown algae "Padina sp." were conducted in a batch reactor under different temperatures (400, 500, and 600 oC) and reaction times (30, 60, and 90 min) in order to investigate the product behavior and the kinetic of solid degradation of Padina sp. during the pyrolysis process. The results showed that the bio-oil from Padina sp. can be split into its constituent parts, with chemicals such as carboxylic acids, hydrocarbons, n-aromatic compounds, amines/amides, and phenolic compounds identified. The ultimate analysis demonstrated that the atomic ratios of the biochar, both H/C and O/C, were lower than those of the raw material. The calorific values vary from 20.96 to 22.25 MJ kg− 1. A scanning electron microscopy (SEM) study of surface morphology also revealed that the biochar formed had a greater surface area than the algal feedstock. Additionally, the reaction kinetics of solid degradation at varied temperatures was deduced. The pre-exponential factor and activation energy for the degradation of solid feedstock were successfully determined for the first time using the Arrhenius equation as 8.44x1010s− 1 and 144.4 kJ mol⁻1, respectively.

Canewood and palm kernel fibre (PKF) have successfully been used as filler material for producing ceiling boards, with recycled low-density polyethylene (LDPE) as the binder. This work covered three aspects which are the optimization of process and production parameters, chemical, and thermal analysis of the utilized filler material. The production parameters considered are the percentage composition of both the binder and filler material while the process parameters studied are the press temperature, pressure and time. These parameters were optimized over both physical and thermal properties of the developed ceiling board which are thermal resistivity, water absorption and thickness swell. Thermal results for both the cane wood and PKF proved to be thermally stable up to temperatures as high as 325 and 310°C, respectively. The optimized ceiling board showed a thermal resistivity, water absorption and thickness swell of 16.192 W/M.K, 4.669 and 6.594% respectively, for a production and process parameters of 15% cane wood, 10% PKF, 75% LDPE, 6 min press time, 7 bar pressure and 198°C press temperature. The produced ceiling board showed a specific heat capacity, thermal energy and heat flux of 769.23 Jkg−1K−1, 60 W and 23.07 kWm−1 respectively. The findings imply that the LDPE filler materials are appropriate for use in ceiling board applications.

To reduce the environmental footprints of fossil fuels, there is a need to source more biomasses to increase the renewable energy supply. However, a critical study of the energy-conversion process of biomass must be carried out to make the process economical. In this research, the optimization of the bio-oil production from the thermal conversion of novel biomass- cow hoof was carried out. Three independent variables- temperature of pyrolysis, heating rate and CaO catalyst mass were studied at 3 levels based on the rotatable central composite design (CCD) of the response surface methodology (RSM) to ascertain their influence on two responses- bio-oil yield and its HHV. The quadratic model was more suitable to fit the experimental data. At optimum values of the process variables, bio-oil yield of 50.64% and HHV of 23.86 MJ/kg were obtained. From the analysis of variance carried out, the model R2 values were 0.9949 and 0.9802 respectively for the bio-oil yield and HHV models which showed the models’ ability to predict the bio-oil yield and its HHV in the pyrolysis process is high. The characterization of the bio-oil revealed it has better fuel properties compared with most bio-oils from some biomasses hence it is a viable renewable energy source.
