Pyrolysis Characteristics of Phoenix Dactylifera Date Palm Seeds Using Thermo-Gravimetric Analysis (TGA)

Abstract: Abstract-Mass losses of Phoenix dactylifera date palm seeds (DPSs) were measured using a thermo-gravimetric analyzer (TGA). Six-milligram-sample of six varieties of DPSs were pyrolyzed in an inert condition (argon atmosphere) with a constant flow rate of 100 ml/min for the entire range of experiments. The experiments were conducted under non-isothermal conditions and at a heating rate of 20°C/min until the furnace wall temperature reached 900°C. The moisture (M), ash (ASH), volatile matter (VM) and fixed carbo… Show more

“…Hemicellulose decomposes between 160 and 360°C, and cellulose decomposes between 240 and 390°C. The decomposition temperature range of lignin is wider and higher, i.e., between 250 and 700°C [39]. Thus, the first peak in Figure 11, which shows the derivation of the weight change of pure date pits (i.e., differential TGA curve), could be due to the decomposition of hemicellulose, cellulose, and lignin.…”

“…Similarly, Eissa and Alghannam (2013) investigated the quality of briquettes produced from date palm residues without identifying the date palm cultivar. The pyrolysis characteristics of the seeds from five date palm cultivars were reported by Babiker et al (2013).…”

“…Six varieties of DPS from different regions, obtained from an importer in Penang, Malaysia, were characterized and tested in the gasifier. The DPSs were characterized for their ultimate and proximate analysis and the results were reported elsewhere [16].…”
