“…In contrast, Mo 2 C (fcc) showed preferential formation of alkanes particularly at higher temperatures. The different behaviors of Mo 2 N and Mo 2 C in activity and selectivity were also observed by Choi et al [9] for HDN of pyridine.…”

“…Markel and Van Zee [7] revealed a strong resistance property of Mo 2 N against being sul®ded in thiophene HDS. Choi et al [9] investigated pyridine HDN on molybdenum carbides with different speci®c surface areas. Most of the above results have shown that molybdenum nitrides and carbides are superior to or comparable to commercial hydrotreating catalysts.…”

“…The only crystalline phase observed in this carbide group was Mo 2 C. This observation was anticipated since according to the Mo-C phase diagram only hexagonal Mo 2 C is thermodynamically stable under the conditions employed in Rudy et al 27 These results are consistent with the XRD analysis conducted by Choi et al, 4 and Oyama et al (100) direction. Line broadening of the sonicated Mo 2 C reveals that the average crystallite size extends in the (101) direction to slightly more than 11 nm and less than 15 nm in the (100) direction.…”

“…In particular, for transition metal carbides and nitrides, the structure and stoichiometry of these materials near the surface are known to have influenced the catalytic properties. For example, it have been reported that the catalytic properties of Mo and W carbides changed with the amount of carbon present in the interstitial sites of the host metal lattice [9,10]. Choi et al [10] have obtained that there is a linear relationship between the pyridine HDN activities over the molybdeum carbides and particle size.…”

Choi et al [10] have obtained that there is a linear relationship between the pyridine HDN activities over the molybdeum carbides and particle size. These results suggested a structure sensitive reaction for pyridine HDN reaction over Mo carbides.…”
