Pyrenocarpous lichens (except Trypetheliaceae) in Rondônia

Abstract: The following new species of pyrenocarpous lichens are described from Rondônia: Agonimia tenuiloba: corticolous, thallus with minute flabellate lobes developing goniocysts; ascomata smooth, grey, ellipsoidal; ascospores densely muriform, 30-50(-76) Â 20-35 mm. Anisomeridium lateriticum: saxicolous; conidiomata sessile, pyriform, ostiole with brown and hyaline septate setae; conidia simple to 1-septate, 8-11 Â 2Á0-2Á5 mm. Anisomeridium triseptatum: corticolous, ascomata with lateral ostioles; ascospores (1-)3-s… Show more

“…However, the first results of this survey for lichens in this largely primary forest shows that the region has among the highest epiphytic lichen diversity in the world. There are many so far undescribed species and genera in groups such as Graphidaceae (Cáceres et al 2014 b ), Arthoniales (Cáceres et al 2014 c ) and the pyrenocarps (Aptroot & Cáceres 2013). Surprisingly, there are undescribed species, or some described recently, that are locally abundant e.g.…”

“…The cover of each taxon was measured in cm 2 (Kuusinen , Kivistö and Kuusinen , Pérez‐Pérez et al , ). The different genera and/or species were identified using specialized keys supported by chemical testing (10% potassium hydroxide (K), sodium hypochlorite (C) and paraphenyldenediamine (P)) (Harris , , Marbach , Staiger , Galloway and Thomas , Kashiwadani and Nash III , Cáceres , Aptroot et al , Rivas Plata and Lücking , Ertz , Lücking et al , , Aptroot , Aptroot and Cáceres , , Moncada et al , Lücking , Nelsen et al , Breuss and Lücking , Mongkolsuk et al , Aptroot and Lücking , Herrera‐Campos et al ). Specimens lacking reproductive structures were identified to genus only.…”

“…In 2012, a project to survey lichens commenced in the primary rainforests of the Amazon basin, initially in Rondônia which is situated at the SW end of the Amazon. The results published so far (Aptroot & Cáceres 2013, 2014 a , b , 2016; Cáceres et al . 2014 a , b ) show that the region may have one of the highest lichen diversities in the world.…”
