Pyogenic Granuloma: A Retrospective Analysis of Cases Treated Over a 10-Year

Abstract: BackgroundPyogenic granuloma (PG) is a benign vascular lesion of the mucosa and skin. Recent studies of the epidemiology of PG are rare. We aimed to retrospectively analyze characteristics of PG cases in South Korea.MethodsWe reviewed the medical records of 155 patients treated for PG between March 2005 and May 2014. The male-to-female ratio was 1:1.2 (70 males, 85 females). The mean age of patients was 35.3 years.ResultsA high occurrence was observed in the first and third decades in males, and the fourth to … Show more

“…PG is a red polypoid nodule that is often formed by trauma-caused lobular hyperplasia of the skin, or mucosal capillary and venules. It usually has effects on aesthetics, which was the most common reason for clinic visits [8][9][10] . PG occurs at any age; in this study, most patients were children and adolescents, and males were slightly more than females.…”

“…This hyperangiogenic lesion grows rapidly, and frequently appears as a haemorrhagic, red-purple, venous or perforating tumour mass 2. In children, PG is more common in boys than in girls; however, in adults, it is more common in women 3 4. Vascular tumours are commonly found in the face and limbs; however, their cause is not yet clear.…”

“…LCH affects both genders beyond the age of 40 years equally. Despite this, there is a predominance of females who are affected by LCH in the third decade while males are more often affected if less than 18 years old [ 16 ]. At present, no underlying mechanisms for the development of LCH have been demonstrated.…”

“…At present, no underlying mechanisms for the development of LCH have been demonstrated. Nevertheless, the most prevalent risk factors for LCH development include local trauma to the skin and mucus membranes, as is seen with nose picking, as well as hormonal imbalances, as occur in pregnancy and in women who use oral contraceptives or are postmenopausal [ 16 ]. Furthermore, LCH often presents with recurrent unilateral epistaxis, nasal obstruction, and discharge, and proper examination and imaging studies are essential to exclude other causes of a similar intranasal mass, inflammation, or neoplastic lesions [ 1 ].…”
