“…In this regard, pXO16 is responsible for a remarkable aggregation phenomenon between donor and recipient cells that has been associated with conjugative transfer of plasmids . Analysis of pXO16 sequence has highlighted a potential region responsible for this aggregation phenotype (Makart et al, 2015). This 27-kb region mostly encodes proteins with putative surface-associated functions, including two very large related proteins with sizes of 3526 and 2558 residues, both containing 'collagen-binding protein-like B-type' domains and a C-terminal cell wall anchoring LPXTG motif.…”

“…Interestingly, these LPXTG motives could be processed by a putative sortase, also encoded in this region. Additionally, four genes coding for proteins annotated as peptidoglycan-linked, glycoside hydrolase, muramidase and S-layer domain containing are also present (Makart et al, 2015).…”

“…Sequencing revealed a candidate plasmid, designated pBTHD789-1, 350 kb in size [17]. The obvious difference in plasmid sizes was not explained, but was finally experimentally resolved in a recent paper that identifies the 350 kb pBTHD789-1 as pXO16 [21]. This identification was based on direct sequencing of pXO16 parts adjacent to the Tn5401 transposon, used for plasmid labeling, and also on sequencing of several PCR amplicons from the pXO16 transferred into a plasmidless strain.…”
