Energy harvesting technologies have gained widespread attention for their perpetual energy supply for sensor nodes. However, the energy resources are still insufficient while the harvesting module is added on the node. To prolong the network lifetime and meet the demand of a green wireless network, a dynamic gradientaware hierarchical packet forwarding mechanism is designed. According to the relative positions of nodes, gradient-aware clusters are established. Consequently, considering the energy conversion efficiency and relative distance, cluster heads are selected reasonably. Furthermore, by exploiting the available energy and the number of cluster members, packets can be forwarded to the sink in an energy-efficient manner. Results show that the network lifetime can be noticeably improved. Even when engaging the EH module, ambient energy is unavailable during the night due to the lack of light. Therefore, to ensure stable energy consumption and reliable packet transmission, and avoid network partitioning, the appropriate use of available energy is still important for EH-WSNs.

 Abstract: The expeditious growth in manufacturing anvils industries has lead towards the development of tiny devices. This growth has motivated to develop small and battery-operated sensor nodes that are widely adopted for establishing the reliable wireless communication. The wireless sensor based communication is generally divided into hierarchal and geographical deployment. Hierarchical system based approaches are widely studied in this field, limited work is present in the field of geographical WSN. In this work, we focus on the geographical WSN. Generally, these networks suffer from energy efficiency and security related issues. Hence, in this work we preset a combined approach to address these challenges. In order to mitigate the energy sparsity issue, we develop geographical routing scheme which selects the neighboring node based on residual energy of the node and distance from the sink node i.e. the maximum residual energy node from the neighboring node which is having less distance from the sink node is selected as next-hop. Due to this approach, the path computation and other network parameters computation is not required hence it reduces the power consumption. Further, we address the security issues where we present Hash modeling to secure the location, Key Exchange model for authentication by using ECDH approach , later we present ECIS based encapsulation method for data security and finally, a trust model based security system is developed. The trust computation of node helps to the routing whether to select the node for next hop or not. This multistage security approach is called as Secure Hash, Authentication and Cryptography based geographical routing (SHAC-GR) protocol. The proposed approach is simulated using MATLAB simulation tool and the performance of proposed approach is compared with existing technique that shows that the proposed approach improves the network performance in terms of network lifetime, energy and packet delivery rate.

Current routing protocols in wireless sensor and actor networks (WSANs) shows a lack of unification for different traffic patterns because the communication for sensor to actor and that for actor to actor are designed separately. Such a design poses a challenge for interoperability between sensors and actors. With the presence of rich-resource actor nodes, we argue that to improve network lifetime, the problem transforms from reducing overall network energy consumption to reducing energy consumption of constrained sensor nodes. To reduce energy consumption of sensor nodes, especially in challenging environments with coverage holes/obstacles, we propose that actor nodes should share forwarding tasks with sensor nodes. To enable such a feature, efficient interoperability between sensors and actors is required, and thus a unified routing protocol for both sensors and actors is needed. This paper explores capabilities of directional transmission with smart antennas and rich-resource actors to design a novel unified actor-oriented directional anycast routing protocol (ADA) which supports arbitrary traffic in WSANs. The proposed routing protocol exploits actors as main routing anchors as much as possible because they have better energy and computing power compared to constraint sensor nodes. In addition, a directional anycast routing approach is also proposed to further reduce total delay and energy consumption of overall network. Through extensive experiments, we show that ADA outperforms state-of-the-art protocols in terms of packet delivery latency, network lifetime, and packet reliability. In addition, by offer fault tolerant features, ADA also performs well in challenging environments where coverage holes and obstacles are of concerns.
