PVA grafted POSS hybrid for high performance polyvinyl alcohol films with enhanced thermal, hydrophobic and mechanical properties

Abstract: As one kind of novel nanomaterial, polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxane (POSS) can improve the thermal stability, water resistance, and mechanical properties of the composites when introduced into a polymer matrix. In this work, we carried a novel method to fabricate polymeric nanocomposite films from poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) by grafting octa(−chloropropyl) POSS using sodium hydroxide (NaOH) as a catalyst. Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) and 1H nuclear magnetic resonance (1H NMR) spectral analysis confirmed… Show more

“…(PVA-PVP) films were flexible, with high elongation at break and low strength. The yield strength and tensile strength at break of MgO / (PVA-PVP) nanocomposite films rose significantly when the MgO content was increased [41,42]. As demonstrated in Fig.…”

“…43 Besides, as illustrated in Figure 2d, the new strong ether-bonding interactions between the PVA molecular chains after heat treatment at 165 °C benefit the thermal stability of the separator even more, compared with the original PVA membrane that had only hydrogen bonding. 44 Based on the above results, we envision the mechanistic understanding of the exceptional mechanical properties of the d-PVA membrane as follows: under the synergistic action of strong cross-links and weak cross-links, ether bonds maintain membrane integrity (increasing the tensile strength) and hydrogen bonds dissipate energy (maintaining the toughness). Figure 2d further clarifies the envisioned molecular-level mechanism.…”

“…However, with the increase of crystallinity, Young’s modulus of the PVA membrane increases correspondingly, which is very beneficial to maintain the integrity of the membrane structure and prevent the growth of lithium dendrites . Besides, as illustrated in Figure d, the new strong ether-bonding interactions between the PVA molecular chains after heat treatment at 165 °C benefit the thermal stability of the separator even more, compared with the original PVA membrane that had only hydrogen bonding …”

“…Having the high thermostability, the larger specific surface area of POSS nano powder has a strong binding force with the composite matrix. Furthermore, the well dispersed POSS provides additional heat capacity in the composite matrix, which acts as a barrier for heat transfer 31,32 . However, the continuous addition of POSS has obvious agglomeration in the matrix, which causes the surface effect of the POSS to be difficult to exert effectively.…”

As the size of POSS aggregate increases, the stability and continuity of the composite matrix are damaged.…”
