Putting Geographical Information Science in Place – Towards Theories of Platial Information and Platial Information Systems

Abstract: Place can hardly be formally captured at the moment, as it is unclear how to represent places and draw conclusions by technological means. GIScience scholars hence use the term ‘Place’ even when they presume a paradigm similar to the one assumed for Geometrical Space, largely ignoring the richness of the geographical Place concept. This article reviews the ongoing debate and outlines directions of how to extend it much beyond the currently assumed spatial paradigm. The agenda laid out in this article aims to s… Show more

“…We then show that the lexical properties and relations connecting place names can be modelled by integrating this multi-modal model (DRT plus syntax) with a frame semantics analysis. We therefore show that our model of “place” can pave the way for a novel, inter-disciplinary approach to platial research ( Tenbrink, 2020 ).…”

“…Sydney and Pitt Street are the place names that allow individuals to refer to these places. Instead, (3) describes some boys playing in a nameless park, i.e., a location introduced in discourse without a specific “platial” (i.e., place-like, Tenbrink, 2020 ) status. Therefore, (1)–(2) are sentences offering semantic information about two closely related and unique places; (3) offers information about some non-specific location identified as a park.…”

“…We agree with this statement, although we also emphasize the need of concurrently collecting the spatial organization of our surroundings, cultural context, and immediate sensory perceptions to better understand the individual–place exposure. The interest of GIScience scholars in place‐based approaches, see for example, the PLATIAL symposium series (Mocnik & Westerholt, 2022; Westerholt & Mocnik, 2019; Westerholt et al, 2018a), and place‐related theoretical research (Mocnik, 2022) has recently been growing. Yet, studies that employ data produced and modeled by subjective, experiential, and relational aspects of place within the field are scarce.…”

“…In addition to these facts and based on the previous experience of the reader, the description also suggests moods and a sense of place. For if we have already visited places to which a similar description would apply, we enrich the mental image of the place described with these moods and the sense of place of similar places that we have already experienced (cf., Mocnik, 2022).…”
