Putative Novel Genotype of Avian Hepatitis E Virus, Hungary, 2010

Abstract: To explore the genetic diversity of avian hepatitis E virus strains, we characterized the near-complete genome of a strain detected in 2010 in Hungary, uncovering moderate genome sequence similarity with reference strains. Public health implications related to consumption of eggs or meat contaminated by avian hepatitis E virus, or to poultry handling, require thorough investigation.

“…Accordingly, the isolates from broiler breeders and day-old chicks investigated in this study grouped within genotype 3, which contains predominantly European isolates. Recently, based on phylogenetic analysis of the whole genome, a new genotype of avian HEV, consisting of a Hungarian and a Taiwanese strain, has been proposed (Bányai et al, 2012;Hsu & Tsai, 2014). The close phylogenetic relationship between those two viruses was supported in this study by analysing helicase nucleic acid sequences but not by capsid nucleic acid sequences, arguing for further analyses.…”

“…Recently, avian HEV infections have also been described in chicken flocks from Russia, Korea and China (Zhao et al, 2010;Kwon et al, 2012;Sprygin et al, 2012). In Hungary and Taiwan, an apparently new genotype has been found (Bányai et al, 2012;Hsu & Tsai, 2014).…”

“…Avian picobirnaviruses (AvPBV) genogroup I in Brazilian broiler chickens and distinct group of turkey origin picobirnavirus have been identified (Ribeiro Silva et al, 2014;Day and Zsak, 2014). A novel avian hepatitis E virus (aHEV) genotype IV has been identified in Hungary and Taiwan (Banyai et al, 2012;Hsu and Tsai, 2014). CPNV associated with transmissible viral proventriculitis in broiler chicken was identified as a novel avian birnavirus, representing a distinct genetic cluster within the Birnaviridae family (Guy et al, 2011).…”
