There is a growing trend in regional dialectology to analyse large corpora of social media data, but it is unclear if the results of these studies can be generalized to language as a whole. To assess the generalizability of Twitter dialect maps, this paper presents the first systematic comparison of regional lexical variation in Twitter corpora and traditional survey data. We compare the regional patterns found in 139 lexical dialect maps based on a 1.8 billion word corpus of geolocated UK Twitter data and the BBC Voices dialect survey. A spatial analysis of these 139 map pairs finds a broad alignment between these two data sources, offering evidence that both approaches to data collection allow for the same basic underlying regional patterns to be identified. We argue that these results license the use of Twitter corpora for general inquiries into regional lexical variation and change.

The availability of large amounts of social media text offers tremendous potential for studies of diatopic variation. A case in point is the linguistic geography of Texas, which is at present insufficiently described in traditional dialectological research. This paper summarises previous work on diatopic variation in Texas English on the basis of Twitter and presents an approach that foregrounds functional interpretability over a maximally clear geographical signal. In a multi-dimensional analysis based on 45 linguistic features in over 3 million tweets from across the state, two dimensions of variation are identified that pattern in geographically meaningful ways. The first of these relates to creative uses of typography and distinguishes urban centres from the rest of the state. The second dimension encompasses characteristics of interpersonal, spoken discourse and shows an East-West geographical divide. While the linguistic features of relevance for the dimensions are not generally considered in dialectological research, their geographic patterning reflects major tendencies attested in the literature on diatopic variation in Texas.[1] [1]I am grateful to Alex Rosenfeld for sharing his data with me. needs+PAST PARTICIPLE in regional Englishes on Twitter

The use of needs with a past participle (as in ‘The car needs washed’) has been identified as a feature of the US Midland, and of Englishes in Scotland, Northern Ireland, and northern England. However, linguists have generally not been able to study needs+PAST in natural language data. This study reports from a large corpus of needs+PAST productions built from tweets in 20 US cities, 17 UK cities, and 13 other cities. It confirms needs+PAST as a productive feature of Scotland, Belfast, Newcastle, and the US Midland, and supports claims that the construction spread via immigration. In doing so, it validates studies based on elicitations of grammaticality judgments, while also demonstrating new techniques to study low‐frequency linguistic variables. It provides quantitative evidence of the extent to which a settler variety of English may leave an imprint of itself over several centuries, and of the durability of regional dialect boundaries.
