Pushing precipitation to the extremes in distributed experiments: recommendations for simulating wet and dry years

Abstract: Intensification of the global hydrological cycle, ranging from larger individual precipitation events to more extreme multi-year droughts, has the potential to cause widespread alterations in ecosystem structure and function. With evidence that the incidence of extreme precipitation years (defined statistically from historical precipitation records) is increasing, there is a clear need to identify ecosystems that are most vulnerable to these changes and understand why some ecosystems are more sensitive to extr… Show more

“…The water addition amount was a 50% increase in the historical 30-year average for the respective month of watering (Table 1); therefore, the spring watering treatment plots received a total addition of 89.4 mm, which was more than the fall watering treatment plots which received a total of 66.3 mm. Relative rather than absolute watering manipulations are recommended for field precipitation experiments [26]. Water addition was applied slowly to minimize surface runoff.…”

“…Percentiles from inferred frequency distributions have been used in different studies to characterize extreme-dry and extreme-wet years (Easterling, 2000;Knapp et al, 2015Knapp et al, , 2016Scian & Pierini, 2013;WMO, 2016). Thus, we defined the threshold values for extremity using a percentile classification approach as described in World Meteorological Organization reports (WMO, 2013(WMO, , 2016.…”

“…Despite observed and projected increases in the frequency of extreme droughts, such events are still rare in running waters, creating an urgent need for large-scale experiments which can expose species to novel conditions beyond their evolutionary envelopes (Kayler et al, 2015;Knapp et al, 2017;Ledger & Milner, 2015). Furthermore, most definitions of an ecological threshold relate the rate of change in ecosystem state to that of a specific environmental pressure in isolation (Capon et al, 2015;Groffman et al, 2006).…”
