Push-out Bond Strength of Root-end Filling Materials

Abstract: The aim of this study was to evaluate the bond strength of root-end filling materials. Forty 2-mm-thick slices were obtained from human single-rooted teeth. After root canal preparation using a 1.5 mm diameter cylindrical drill, the dentinal walls were prepared by diamond ultrasonic tip (CVD T0F-2). The specimens were divided according the material (n=10): MTA Angelus (MTAA), MTA Sealer (MTAS, experimental), Sealer 26 (S26) and zinc oxide and eugenol cement (ZOE). The push-out test was performed in a mechanica… Show more

“…6,21,22 Furthermore, the bonding interface must remain intact over time and not compromise clinical procedures, such as the removal of part of the sealing material for the installation of root canal posts, because the teeth are subjected to mechanical forces that can displace the sealing material beyond root canal limits. 23,24 Therefore, in the present study, the BS of the filling material was evaluated after 24 h and 6 months of storage in water.…”

“…fidelity in results. 24,25,26,27 However, this method is limited by the standardization of specimen positioning, which is essential for reproducibility 8 . In the present study, specimens were positioned upright to the dentinal tubules, which act as a retaining force within the root canal.…”

“…The specimens were fixed in a device to create the retrograde cavities and to favor parallelism of the dentin walls, according to Vivan et al . [ 26 ]. The retrograde cavities were prepared with a 12/90D diamond insert coupled to a piezoelectric ultrasonic device (Piezon master 200, EMS, Nyon, Switzerland) measuring 3 mm in depth and 1.5 mm in diameter, with constant irrigation.…”

“…The maximum force to dislocate the cement from canal was measured in newtons (N). The bond strength was calculated in MPa by dividing the force in N by the area of the canal in mm 2 [ 26 ].…”

“…In addition to material characteristics, the adaptation of the retrograde filling to the apical root dentin is vital for the success of the surgical therapy. [5] The adaptation and the interface between the root dentine and the retrograde filling materials have been determined by pushout tests. It is a mechanical test to measure the resistance of the tested material to dislodgment and its adhesive property.…”
