Pusa Basmati 1121 – a rice variety with exceptional kernel elongation and volume expansion after cooking

Abstract: Pusa Basmati 1121 (PB 1121) is a landmark Basmati rice variety having Basmati quality traits introgressed from traditional Basmati varieties such as Basmati 370 and Type 3. It was released for commercial cultivation in 2003. It possesses extra-long slender milled grains (9.00 mm), pleasant aroma, and an exceptionally high cooked kernel elongation ratio of 2.5 with a cooked kernel length of up to 22 mm, volume expansion more than four times, appealing taste, good mouth feel and easy digestibility. Owing to its … Show more

“…PB 1121, Sonasal and Bindli were placed at the edge of aromatic subgroup whereas LGR was found to be placed at the edge of temperate japonica clade ( Figure 4A). This is in accordance with earlier SSR marker based characterization of PB 1121 as premium basmati, and Sonasal and Bindli as short grain aromatic landraces (Singh et al, 2000;Singh et al, 2018). On the other hand, Nipponbare was placed in the center of the japonica clade, indicating that unlike Nipponbare, the four genotypes might be very different from the core members of japonica group.…”

“…PB 1121, developed by our group at ICAR-Indian Agricultural Research Institute (IARI), New Delhi, is a Basmati rice variety par excellence in grain and cooking quality with an exceptionally high cooked kernel length (22 mm) and elongation ratio of > 2.5. This variety is currently grown on approximately 1.2 million ha area (60% of the Basmati area in India) and contributes annually 3.41 billion USD to foreign exchange earnings through the export of Basmati rice (Singh et al 2018b).…”

“…Development of Improved Pusa Basmati 1 involved transfer of two genes for bacterial blight resistance (xa13, Xa21) from a non-Basmati source, IRBB55 into a popular semi-dwarf, high yielding Basmati rice variety, Pusa Basmati 1 (Joseph et al 2004). Basmati rice is uniquely known for its grain and cooking quality (Singh et al 2018b), due to which there is a potential risk of impairing the grain and cooking quality especially when non-Basmati rice genotypes were used as donors for gene(s)/QTLs governing the target traits. In our programme, to recover the Basmati traits we have incorporated phenotypic selection focussing on grain and cooking quality recovery.…”

“…Classical pedigree breeding based Basmati rice research at ICAR-Indian Agricultural Research Institute (ICAR-IARI), New Delhi spanning over two decades led to development of world's first semi-dwarf high yielding Basmati rice cultivar released for cultivation in 1989 (Singh and Krishnan, 2016). The release of Pusa Basmati 1121 was another milestone in terms of improving cooked kernel elongation in Basmati rice (Singh et al 2018b) which was followed by release of Pusa Basmati 6. The release of a climate smart Basmati rice variety, Pusa Basmati 1509 improved the net returns of farmers due to its short duration (120 days) and higher [Vol.…”
