Purifying surface waters contaminated with natural organic matters and bacteria using Ag/PDA-coated PES membranes

Abstract: Polymeric membrane is susceptible to fouling particularly when it is used to treat surface water contaminated by natural organic matters and bacteria. Surface modification may address the issue by imparting antifouling and antibacterial properties to the membrane. In this study, a neat polyethersulfone (PES) membrane (denoted as membrane P1) was prepared by phase inversion method followed by polydopamine (PDA) coating to improve its membrane hydrophilicity. Thereafter, the physicochemical properties of the PDA… Show more

“…Subsequent filtration through these membranes resulted in permeate that exhibited a turbidity removal rate of over 90%. Notably, the turbidity level of the permeate from membrane S2(Ag0.5) closely resembles the turbidity value of tap water from Kuala Lumpur, which stands at 0.86 NTU [29]. This enhanced performance is likely due to the presence of an Ag added that effectively obstructed membrane pores, thereby improving the rejection of particulates through molecular sieving.…”

“…A polymeric membrane can encompass various approaches, preparation methods, and characterization techniques. Yet, all membranes are composed of polymeric materials, such as polyethersulfone (PES) [13], polyacrylonitrile (PAN) [14], polypropylene (PP) [15], polysulfide (PS), polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE), and polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF), among other polymers. PVDF is a semicrystalline polymer that exhibits solvent resistance.…”
