Purification, Chemical Characterization and Immunomodulatory Activity of a Sulfated Polysaccharide from Marine Brown Algae Durvillaea antarctica

Abstract: An immunomodulatory polysaccharide (DAP4) was extracted, purified, and characterized from Durvillaea antarctica. The results of chemical and spectroscopic analyses demonstrated that the polysaccharide was a fucoidan, and was mainly composed of (1→3)-α-l-Fucp and (1→4)-α-l-Fucp residues with a small degree of branching at C-3 of (1→4)-α-l-Fucp residues. Sulfate groups were at C-4 of (1→3)-α-l-Fucp, C-2 of (1→4)-α-l-Fucp and minor C-6 of (1→4)-β-d-Galp. Small amounts of xylose and galactose exist in the forms of… Show more

“…In addition, the characteristic absorption at 1413 cm −1 was derived from the variable angle vibration of C–H. 38 The absorptions at around 1740 cm −1 and 1631 cm −1 corresponded to the vibration of esterified and free carboxyl groups, confirming the presence of uronic acid. 39 The absorption at 1236 cm −1 was attributed to the C–O stretching vibration.…”

“…The band at 1633 cm −1 was attributed to the acyl group [ 35 ]. The peak of 1594 cm −1 was due to the bending vibration of O–H [ 36 ]. The band at 1215–1255 cm −1 was attributed to the existence of sulfate group, which was a characteristic component of fucoidan.…”

“…This could be due to polysaccharides in seaweeds, as cochayuyo can stimulate lipid metabolism. The body catabolizes fatty acids as the primary energy expenditure, explaining the increase in phospholipid species detected in this study [ 49 , 50 ].…”
