Purification and viscosity experiments on gum arabic

Abstract: A purification procedure for gum arabic is reported. The impurities can be entirely removed by treating the aqueous solutions with cation exchange resin. The samples are precipitated by acetone. The ionic impurities are found to consist of Mg, and traces of Fe have been confirmed. The effect of these ions on the viscosity contribution is investigated.
