To alleviate the deleterious effect of heat stress during summer conditions on male rabbits' reproduction, 40 V Line adult rabbit bucks (on av. 8 mo old) were divided into 4 experimental groups and exposed to temperatures ranging from 23 to 36°C. Bucks in the 1 st , 2 nd , 3 rd , and 4 th group were supplemented with 0, 50, 100 or 150 mg of Chinese royal jelly (RJ)/kg twice per week, respectively, over a 20-wk period. Semen quality and blood biochemical constituents were evaluated. RJ at any dose exhibited a significant increase (P<0.05) in rabbits' sperm concentration, total sperm output, sperm motility, live sperm and normal sperm compared to the untreated controls. Plasma total protein, albumin, globulin, glucose and high density lipids (HDL) concentrations were significantly (P<0.05) boosted in the RJ groups compared to the controls. In contrast, RJ treatment resulted in a significant (P<0.05) reduction in plasma total lipids, triglycerides, cholesterol and low density lipids (LDL) concentrations. Treatment with RJ significantly boosted (P<0.05) testosterone concentration in the RJ groups to reach 110, 120 and 128%, respectively, of the control group. Improved kidney and liver functions were observed in the RJ bucks groups where plasma creatinine, urea concentrations, aspartate aminotransferase and alanine aminotransferase enzyme activities were significantly (P<0.05) decreased by RJ treatments. Treating bucks subjected to heat stress by different RJ doses increased (P<0.05) total antioxidant capacity to 106, 111 and 115% of basal, but significantly reduced (P<0.05) malondialdehyde and thiobarbituric acid reactive substances compared to the untreated. It was concluded that Chinese royal jelly supplementation for heat-stressed male rabbits can counteract summer infertility and improve their physiological status.

zé p fasor 52, Hungary HmbB, a predominantly mitochondrial high-mobility group box (HMGB) protein, of Aspergillus nidulans affects diverse biological activities, such as sterigmatocystin production, the maintenance of mitochondrial DNA copy number, germination of asexual and sexual spores, and protection against oxidative stress agents. We hypothesized that the latter correlates with an unbalanced intracellular redox state, in which case, a not yet fully characterized physiological function could be attributed to this mitochondrial HMGB protein. Here, we studied the intracellular redox environment and oxidative stress tolerance in hmbB + and hmbBD strains under normal and oxidative stress conditions by measuring glutathione redox couple, intracellular reactive oxygen species (ROS) content and ROS-protecting enzyme activities. Our results revealed that the intracellular redox environment is different in hmbBD conidia and mycelia from that of hmbB + , and shed light on the seemingly contradictory difference in the tolerance of hmbBD mycelia to diamide and menadione oxidative stressors.

BACKGROUND: “VITALPLANT” medicinal plant mixture, aimed at body weight regulation and metabolism enhancement was formulated in order to be incorporated as an ingredient in functional food formulations on the basis of known biological activity of the alder buckthorn bark, peppermint, caraway and parsley. METHODOLOGY: The body weight-lowering potential, hypolipidemic effects and antioxidant activity of “Vitalplant” mixture were examined on five groups of male Wistar rats on different food regimes for 14 weeks. RESULTS: “Vitalplant” mixture supplementation caused an increase in food intake, but induced a decrease in body weight gain. The lipid status and atherogenic index (AI) were significantly improved in “Vitalplant” mixture supplemented hyperlipidemic (HF) groups in comparison to HF group. “Vitalplant” mixture was able to influence the activity of antioxidant enzymes and to protect erythrocytes of the rats fed the HF diet from oxidative damage, which was indicated by significantly lower malondialdehyde (MDA) levels in “Vitalplant”- HF groups in comparison to the HF group. CONCLUSION: “Vitalplant” mixture seemed to be beneficial for the reduction of body weight and improvement of antioxidant status of the erythrocytes, and its antihyperlipidemic property was highly active for enhancing the profile of plasma lipids in rats.
