Purification and Identification of Components of γ-Oryzanol in Rice Bran Oil

Abstract: High-purity gamma-oryzanol was obtained from crude rice bran oil using a normal-phase preparative scale HPLC. A reverse-phase HPLC method was used for separating the individual components of gamma-oryzanol present in rice bran oil. Ten fractions were isolated and collected using the reverse-phase HPLC method, and their structures were identified. Identification was accomplished using GC/MS with an electron impact mass spectrum after components were transformed into trimethylsilyl ether derivatives. The 10 comp… Show more

“…40) Rice bran also contains 3000 mg/kg OZ, which is a mixture of 10 ferulate esters of triterpene alcohol. 41) In our study, the fatty acid profile of RB-SCE was similar to those stated in previous reports. However, the minor components of rice bran differed compared with those stated in previous reports, which was likely due to the difference in rice strains and extraction conditions used based on supercritical CO 2 extraction.…”

“…Gamma-oryzanol, a group of ferulic acid esters of phytosterols, is a major phytochemical in rice bran oil. Among the ten components of gamma-oryzanol that have been isolated and identified from rice bran oil 3) , the four major components are cycloartenyl ferulate, 24-methylene cycloartanyl ferulate, b-sitosteryl ferulate and campesteryl ferulate 4) . The gamma-oryzanol exhibits antioxidant properties, including free radical scavenging 4,5) and lipoperoxidation prevention 5,6) .…”

“…The center rows in each experimental plot were harvested to observe grain yield. In addition, gamma oryzanol values from rice bran of 27 tested genotypes were also recorded by using high performance liquid chomatography (HPLC) method (Xu and Godber, 1999). Analysis of variance for individual locations and combined analysis of variances of 8 locations were performed by following the procedure described by Gomez and Gomez (1984).…”
