Purification and genomic analysis of baculovirus associated with white spot syndrome (WSBV) of Penaeus monodon

Abstract: ABSTRACT. The causative viral agent was purified from diseased shrimp Penaeus monodon with white spot syndrome. Negatively stained preparations show that the virus is pleiomorphic. It is fusiform or rod-shaped. In negatively stained preparations, the virion measures 70 to 150 nm at its broadest point and is 250 to 380 nm long. In some virions, a tail-like projection extends from one end. The capsid is apparently composed of rings of subunits in a stacked series. The rings are aligned perpendicular to the longi… Show more

“…WSSV is a double-stranded rod-shaped DNA virus and belongs to the family Nimaviridae [17]. This virus is well known for its high virulence and thereby bringing severe mortality within a short span of time [19,34]. IHHNV was discovered as early as 1981 when it was highly virulent to Penaeus stylirostris resulting in high mortality [14].…”

“…1995). WSSV is an enveloped virus with a large, double-stranded, circular DNA genome (∼300 kb) containing approximately 180 putative open reading frames (ORFs), most of which have no homology with any known genes or proteins in public databases Wongteerasupaya et al 1995;Wang et al 1995;Chang et al 1996;Chen et al 1997;Yang et al 2001). Proper husbandry and management of farms with the application of immunostimulants, probiotics and bioremediators can save the industry from the onslaught of diseases to a certain extent.…”

“…It is an enveloped, non-occluded, rod-shaped and circular double-stranded DNA (about 300 kbp) virus [3][4][5][6]. Based on its unique genetic information and morphological feature, WSSV was classified in a new virus family, Nimaviridae in 2002 [7].…”
