Purification and Concentration of the Total Saikosaponins Extracted fromRadix Bupleuriusing Foam Fractionation

Abstract: The purpose of this study was to investigate the use of foam fractionation to recover saikosaponins. First, the solvent extraction method was applied for the extraction of saikosaponins from radix bupleuri using ethanol or deionized water. Then, the foam fractionation technique in batch mode was used for the recovery of the total saikosaponins from the extract. The effects of initial concentration, air flow rate, liquid loading volume, pH, and operating time on the process performance were investigated. The re… Show more

“…Radix bupleuri rhizomes were purchased from Shanghai State-owned Changning Pharmacy (Shanghai, China); Saikosaponin A was isolated and characterized according to a previous report with slight modification [ 30 ]. 1000-g rhizomes of Radix bupleuri were taken, crushed, sieved through a 20-30-mesh sieve, soaked with 100% ethanol for three days, filtered, combined with the soaking solution, and evaporated under reduced pressure on a rotary evaporator to recover ethanol.…”

“…The pH under 5 was not taken into account because it was detrimental for polymyxin E fermentation. Many researchers demonstrated the best pH for protein foam separation was at its isoelectric point (PI), [17][18][19] because the repulsive force between proteins was the lowest at PI. Therefore, proteins were prone to adsorb on gas-liquid interfaces.…”

“…Compared with other separation methods, foam fractionation is an interesting method owing to its advantages of simple equipment, low energy consumption, less investment and free pollution. It is specially suitable for separating trace materials from their solutions . Rujirawanich et al and Moussavi et al used SDS as the collector to remove C d 2+ and Hg + from their simulated wastewaters.…”
