“…Helminthosporium sativum Pammel, King and Bakke) is a widespread necrotrophic fungus; barley and wheat are the most important cereal hosts (Tinline, 1988). It causes common root rot, seedhng blight, black nodes and stem breakage, spot blotch of leaves, headblight and seed smudge (Jergensen, 1974;Raemakers and Tinline, 1981;Mathre, 1982), Peltonen et al (1994) showed that xylanase activity in B. sorokiniana was high compared with other cell wall degrading enzymes when the fungus was grown in media containing barley cell wall preparation as the sole carbon source.
