Pure primary signet ring cell carcinoma breast: A rare cytological diagnosis

Abstract: Signet ring cell carcinoma (SRCC) of the breast is a rare tumor and it is classified by World Health Organization in 2003 classification under ‘mucin producing carcinomas’. Pure form of SRCC breast is an extremely rare entity and very few cases have been reported in literature so far. We present a case of pure primary SRCC of the breast in a 70-year-old female, which was diagnosed on fine needle aspiration cytology. Cytological features generally show cellular smears with tumor cells showing eccentrically plac… Show more

“…The findings showed no significant difference in age and sex ratio between SRCC and MBC patients. In addition, the incidence of the two types of tumors was higher in elderly patients, which is consistent with findings from other studies (15,16). Previous studies report that high-grade tumors were more common in the SRCC group compared with the MBC group (17,18).…”

“…Although placed under the same subtype of carcinoma as mucinous breast cancer (MBC), different morphology and biologic behavior between these two types of mucin-producing carcinoma has been observed. PSRCC is characterized by numerous cells containing intracytoplasmic mucin and associated with aggressive clinical behavior, as opposed to extracellular mucin and favorable prognosis of MBC [ 1 , 2 , 10 15 ]. It is important to distinguish PSRCC from MBC, since it is believed that treatment options and the clinical outcome are different [ 2 ].…”

“…SRCC of the breast is a rare entity, accounting for 2–4.5% of total breast carcinomas. Presentation as a pure SRCC in the breast is even more uncommon, with an unknown actual incidence [ 2 ]. To the best of our knowledge, there are no reported cases in which these two pathological rarities appear simultaneously.…”
