Abstract: This study aimed to investigate consumers’ intentions to purchase sustainable masks to reduce the environmental pollution caused by disposable masks in the context of COVID-19. “…VBN theory is a causal chain theoretical framework proposed by Stern et al [29] based on the Normative Activation Model (NAM) that links individuals' values, belief structures, and norms that support and uphold the environment/society to their pro-environmental/social behaviors, which in turn explains the outcomes of human-environmental and social interactions. The VBN theory has been applied to study pro-environmental behavior and sustainable consumption, including improving household energy efficiency [30], policies to reduce car use [31], and the purchase of sustainable masks [32] and organic food [33]. Considering that organic food consumption is a specific type of pro-environmental behavior and that organic food production reduces dependence on chemical fertilizers, pesticides, and genetically modified crops and reduces pollution of soil and water sources [34], the VBN model was used in this study.…”
