Pupillary light reflex circuits in the macaque monkey: the preganglionic Edinger–Westphal nucleus

Abstract: The motor outflow for the pupillary light reflex originates in the preganglionic motoneuron subdivision of the Edinger-Westphal nucleus (EWpg), which also mediates lens accommodation. Despite their importance for vision, the morphology, ultrastructure and luminance-related inputs of these motoneurons have not been fully described in primates. In macaque monkeys, we labeled EWpg motoneurons from ciliary ganglion and orbital injections. Both approaches indicated preganglionic motoneurons occupy an EWpg organized… Show more

“…The dominant luminance pathway consists of retinal input to the pretectal olivary nuclei via intrinsically photosensitive retinal ganglion cells [ 71 ]. Neurons in the pretectal olivary nucleus project directly to the Edinger Westphal nucleus (EW) [ 72 , 73 ]. Many different brainstem nuclei and pathways are responsible for the non-luminance modulations of pupil size [ 74 ].…”

“…The pretectum is a caudal region of the diencephalon perhaps best known for its role in relaying visual inputs from the retina and optic tectum to other brain centers mediating functions like the pupillary light reflex (May, Sun, Wright, & Erichsen, 2020; Puelles, Martinez‐de‐la‐Torre, Ferran, & Watson, 2012; Sun & May, 2014; Yáñez, Suárez, Quelle, Folgueira, & Anadón, 2018). The pretectal area consists of several nuclei, of which two receive input from the DCN: the posterior pretectal nucleus, and the pars compacta of the anterior pretectal nucleus (Berkley & Hand, 1978a; Berkley & Mash, 1978; Björkeland & Boivie, 1984; Wiberg et al, 1987; Wiberg & Blomqvist, 1984b).…”
