We investigate the influence of a perpendicular magnetic field on the spectral and spin properties of a ballistic quasi-one-dimensional electron system with Rashba effect. The magnetic field strongly alters the spin-orbit induced modification to the subband structure when the magnetic length becomes comparable to the lateral confinement. A new subband-dependent energy splitting at k = 0 is found which can be much larger than the Zeeman splitting. This is due to the breaking of a combined spin orbital-parity symmetry.

We propose a device that allows for the emission of pairs of spin-polarized electrons into the edge-states of a two dimensional topological insulator. Charge and spin emission is achieved using a periodically driven quantum dot weakly coupled to the edge states of the host topological insulator. We present calculations of the emitted time-dependent charge and spin currents of such a dynamical scatterer using the Floquet scattering matrix approach. Experimental signatures of spin-polarized two-particle emission can be found in noise measurements. Here a new form of noise suppression, named Z2-antibunching, is introduced. Additionally, we propose a set-up in which entanglement of the emitted electrons is generated. This entanglement is based on a post-selection procedure and becomes manifest in a violation of a Clauser-Horne-Shimony-Holt inequality.

Adiabatic charge and spin pumping through quantum dots with ferromagnetic leads

We study adiabatic pumping of electrons through quantum dots attached to ferromagnetic leads. Hereby we make use of a real-time diagrammatic technique in the adiabatic limit that takes into account strong Coulomb interaction in the dot. We analyze the degree of spin polarization of electrons pumped from a ferromagnet through the dot to a nonmagnetic lead (N-dot-F) as well as the dependence of the pumped charge on the relative leads' magnetization orientations for a spinvalve (F-dot-F) structure. For the former case, we find that, depending on the relative coupling strength to the leads, spin and charge can, on average, be pumped in opposite directions. For the latter case, we find an angular dependence of the pumped charge, that becomes more and more anharmonic for large spin polarization in the leads.
