Air-core pulsed alternator has been a promising pulsed power supply for electromagnetic launching system, due to its characteristics of high power density and high energy density, especially on the occasion with restriction of weight and volume. It is made of non-ferromagnetic materials and especially the rotor is constructed by titanium alloy with high specific strength. That means the air-core pulsed alternator can run at a much higher tip speed compared with that of conventional iron-core machines, which has a great improvement in the energy storage density. But high speed leads to big challenges such as huge centrifugal forces on rotor and vibration phenomenon, and both of them should be taken into consideration carefully.In this text, a typical rotor structure of air-core pulsed alternators is introduced in detail. Then, the stress calculation and simulation about rotor components are carried out when the machine operates in normal. Also, in order to avoid the harsh situation of resonance, the influence of bearing's radius and its mounting position on the critical speed is analyzed. The actual vibration mode and critical speed of the rotor are given at the selected radius and position. The above research has important significance to optimize and fabricate the prototype.

Abstract-This literature review addresses inductive pulsed power generators and their major components. Different inductive storage designs like solenoids, toroids and force-balanced coils are briefly presented and their advantages and disadvantages are mentioned. Special emphasis is given to inductive circuit topologies which have been investigated in railgun research such as the XRAM, meat grinder or pulse transformer topologies. One section deals with opening switches as they are indispensable for inductive storages and another one deals briefly with SMES for pulsed power applications. In the end, the most relevant inductor systems which were realized in respect to railgun research are summarized in a table, together with its main characteristics.

This paper investigates the ability of a gas turbine alternator to provide power to an electromagnetic (EM) railgun in surface combatants whilst simultaneously maintaining acceptable levels of power quality for other consumers. Following the justification of the investigation and a description of the research methods, which includes a proposed EM railgun charging control system, this paper discusses simulated results obtained from a validated power system model for both single shot and salvo operations and identifies factors that limit the rates of fire in each case. The findings from the investigations suggest that a large gas turbine alternator is able to maintain quality of power supply within acceptable limits for the majority of EM railgun operations. However, the transient quality of power supply limits was found to be exceeded for heavy firing rates but would remain within tolerable limits as defined for exceptional loads by North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) standardization agreement (STANAG) 1008 Edition 9. A method to increase the maximum rate of fire whilst maintaining the quality of the power supply within acceptable limits is investigated by increasing the size of the energy storage device and retaining a residual charge. The paper concludes by suggesting that the EM railgun system could be integrated into the ship's electrical system without the need for any additional prime movers to achieve rates of fire commensurate with a surface combatant's requirements.
