Pulsed Laser Ablation Synthesis of Diamond Molecules in Supercritical Fluids

Abstract: Nanocarbon materials have been synthesized by pulsed laser ablation (532 nm; 52 J/cm2; 7 ns; 10 Hz) of highly oriented pyrolytic graphite in adamantane-dissolved supercritical xenon at a temperature T = 290.2 K and pressure p = 5.86 MPa. Micro-Raman spectroscopy of the products revealed the presence of hydrocarbons possessing sp3 hybridized bonds also found in diamond structures. The synthesis of diamantane was confirmed by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry. The same measurements also indicate the possible … Show more

“…The most common are second harmonic (532 nm) Nd:YAG pulsed laser sources (e.g., Ref. [7]) that are operated with a repetition rate of a few Hz and pulse widths of a few nanoseconds (∼ 5 to 10 ns) and fluencies of a few tens of milli-Joules per pulse.…”

“…In these experiments, we especially focussed on the characterization of the samples by GC-MS (GCMS-QP2010 Plus, Shimadzu Corp.), using the same carrier gas and temperature ramp as described previously [22,24]. The GC-MS measurements were conducted by alternating between the selected ionmonitoring mode (SIM) and scan mode.…”

“…Recently, it has been demonstrated that nanodiamonds [20] and diamondoids can be synthesized both by dielectric barrier discharges (DBDs) [21][22][23] and pulsed laser ablation plasmas in supercritical xenon (scXe) [24] and CO 2 [25]. In these reports, the diamondoids were characterized by energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy, micro-Raman spectroscopy, and gas chromatography -mass spectrometry (GC-MS).…”

“…Numerous reports in the last two decades have described the generation of various types of nanoparticles by PLA in supercritical uids (SCFs) (Saitow, 2005;Tomai et al, 2007;Saitow et al, 2008;Saitow and Yamamura, 2009;Nakahara et al, 2010Nakahara et al, , 2011Machmudah et al, 2011Machmudah et al, , 2013Kato et al, 2012). SCFs are non-condensable uids with high densities close to those of liquids in normal conditions.…”
