Pulse-to-pulse wavefront sensing at free-electron lasers using ptychography

Abstract: The pressing need for knowledge of the detailed wavefront properties of ultra-bright and ultra-short pulses produced by free-electron lasers has spurred the development of several complementary characterization approaches. Here a method based on ptychography is presented that can retrieve high-resolution complex-valued wavefunctions of individual pulses without strong constraints on the illumination or sample object used. The technique is demonstrated within experimental conditions suited for diffracti… Show more

“…Equation 12expresses the undamaged electron density in the sample via the coherent modes that can be retrieved from experimental data, collected in the presence of radiation damage, using phase retrieval algorithms (Whitehead et al, 2009;Quiney, 2010;Sala et al, 2019) and the eigenvectors of the matrix SP obtained from the theoretical model. Importantly, the first summation in equation 12can always be truncated at a finite k = M, which corresponds to the singularvalue decomposition (SVD) of the matrix SP, SPx = P k k hx; v k i u k (Golub & Van Loan, 1989).…”

“…These modes can in principle be retrieved from the 3D diffraction fluence, collected in the presence of radiation damage, and a priori information about the sample (Quiney, 2010;Quiney & Nugent, 2011;Curwood et al, 2013). A different algorithm for solving a generalized phase retrieval problem (Thibault & Menzel, 2013) has been successfully used to retrieve ten coherent modes from the diffraction data collected in an XFEL imaging experiment (Sala et al, 2019).…”

“…This constrains the transfer of some of the most powerful imaging methods developed for synchrotron radiation to XFELs, namely ptychography (Rodenburg et al, 2007) on the nano scale; or correspondingly on meso-and macroscopic scales interferometric (Weitkamp et al, 2005), and analyzer-based imaging methods (Chapman et al, 1997). Ptychography with XFEL radiation has been demonstrated for static specimens (Schropp et al, 2013;Sala et al, 2020), and can be parallelized to some extent (Hirose et al, 2020), but not yet with single-pulse capability. Coherent diffraction imaging (CDI) (Miao et al, 1999), on the other hand, has been successfully implemented for single-pulse XFEL applications, including small biological particles such as bacteria or viruses (Seibert et al, 2011;Neutze et al, 2000;Sobolev et al, 2019;Bogan et al, 2008;Robinson et al, 2015).…”

“…De Caro et al (2020) use it to image some peculiarly shaped nanocrystals in a polymer matrix. Sala et al (2020) show us how ptychography can be used with a range of sources and a variety of purposes by imaging the wavefront of an X-ray free-electron laser.…”
