In the field of thermoanalytical kinetics, which is widely used, basic questions arise regarding a possible description of the effect of heat transfer and subsequent thermal inertia. Current practice still uses a simplified interpretation of directly measured data for an inert sample at a constant temperature rise to describe the studied reaction, which leads to a simplified reaction conversion ratio, which is further used for various mathematical processing. The analysis of the introduced rectangular heat pulses and their indication by DTA clearly shows that the effect of thermal inertia is fundamental and not negligible. This is, after all, known from calorimetry, where the integral constant of inertia has historically been used to calibrate the descending temperature, but it cannot generally be applied to the whole temperature process due to its nonlinearity. In the case of parallel processing, for example by gradually increasing the heating rate, the effect of thermal inertia can be partially compensated for each other which have yet to be confirmed. However, for the kinetic analysis of a single peak, it is necessary to adapt to the effect of the thermal delay due to thermal inertia, which, similarly to the measured enthalpy, is tied to the sample size. Of course, it will be up to the researcher to find a solution that also includes the effect of heat transfer and dissipation, which should become the main principle of thermoanalytical methods of the future, as shown by current examples combining thermal processes with their specific kinetics.

The specific heat capacity (Cp) of blast furnace (BF) slag critically impacts BF smelting and reports on the Cp of BF slag with high Al2O3 are rare. Mineral transform and Cp characterization of synthesized BF slag (CaO–SiO2–MgO–Al2O3) with high Al2O3 in the heating process are herein discussed. Differential scanning calorimetry curves show a major exothermic peak at a low temperature and multiple endothermic peaks at elevated temperatures. The exothermic peak at approximately 920 °C appears when amorphous SiO2 (or SiO2 in silicate) becomes crystal SiO2 (or SiO2 in silicate). The endothermic peak between 1224–1254 °C is attributed to the reverse eutectic reaction, CaO·Al2O3·2SiO2 + 2CaO·0.5MgO·0.5Al2O3·1.5SiO2 → Liquid, along a eutectic line. CaO·Al2O3·2SiO2 + MgO·SiO2 → Liquid + 2MgO·SiO2 (reverse peritectic reaction) or CaO·Al2O3·2SiO2 + 2MgO·SiO2 → Liquid (reverse eutectic reaction) at approximately 1268 °C will occur with an endothermic reaction in some cases. The sharp endothermic peak between 1282 and 1303 °C is the reverse eutectic reaction, CaO·SiO2 + 2CaO·Al2O3·SiO2 → Liquid. The blunt endothermic peak between 1388 and 1447 °C is the residual slag melting, Solid → Liquid. The relationships of Cp with temperatures and compositions (R, ratio of w(MgO)/w(Al2O3), and w(Al2O3)) are established with a good fit.

The classical millisecond-resolution pulse-heating method makes use of tubular specimens with a rectangular blackbody hole for accurate measurements of several thermophysical properties at high temperatures. An alternative measurement technique that uses simple strip specimens has been developed at the IMGC (Italy). The normal spectral emissivity of the pulse-heated strip is measured by integrating sphere reflectometry, using a modulated laser beam to discriminate between the reflected radiation and that self-emitted by the specimen. After a brief description of the measurement system and a review of the main experimental results, attention is devoted to current developments and possible improvements of the method, with particular attention to experiments performed at the melting point. The measurement technique is analyzed and evaluated, with a brief description of potential future measurement possibilities.
