Pulmonary Sequelae of Bronchopulmonary Dysplasia Survivors

Abstract: OBJECTIVE. We examined the high-resolution CT findings of adult survivors of bronchopulmonary dysplasia. CONCLUSION. The cardinal CT features of bronchopulmonary dysplasia survivors include multifocal areas of reduced lung attenuation and perfusion, bronchial wall thickening, and decreased bronchus-to-pulmonary artery diameter ratios.

“…The increase in sReff among children with prior BPD, but not in those without, may be associated with increased bronchial smooth muscle and airway narrowing associated with the more prolonged and intense ventilatory support received by these children [34]. These findings of functional impairments are consistent with morphometric data from survivors with BPD [35].…”

“…However, despite that, there is still a lack information in regards to structural abnormalities in ex-preterm children and adults with and without BPD (See Table 4). High resolution computed tomography (HRCT) images of the chest have been reported to be abnormal and thus useful in the diagnosis of BPD (Howling et al, 2000;Oppenheim et al, 1994). In one cohort of children with a median age of 10 years, 20/26 (77%) of the subjects had reduced lung attenuation (Aquino et al, 1999).…”

“…By contrast, Northway and associatcs continued after 1967 to call attention to and to make fbrther observations on the interstitial component of longer term sequelae of pressure based ventilatory support and oxygen enrichment (Northway and Rosan, 1968;Northway and Rosan, 1969;Bonikos et al, 1976;Edwards et al, 1977;Northway, 1979;Northway, 1990;Northway et al, 1990;Northway, 1992;Howling et al, 2000).
