Pulmonary Microascus cirrosus infection in an immunocompetent patient with bronchiectasis: A case report

Abstract: Microascus species are widely distributed and rarely cause invasive infection in humans. Here we report a case of lung Microascus cirrosus infection in an immunocompetent patient with bronchiectasis. While on systemic voriconazole and aerosolized amphotericin B for three months, the patient's overall condition improved. This case report highlights the possibility of rare pathogen infection occurred in a bronchiectasis patient, as well as the importance of accurate diagnosis an… Show more

“…Twenty-two publications, mostly case reports and case series, gathering 100 patients have reported the use of n-AmB as an adjunctive treatment for IMIs (see Supplementary Materials, Table S1 ) [ 18 , 63 , 64 , 65 , 66 , 67 , 68 , 69 , 70 , 71 , 72 , 73 , 74 , 75 , 76 , 77 , 78 , 79 , 80 , 81 , 82 , 83 , 84 ]. Curative nebulized treatment has been used in two forms of aspergillosis, tracheobronchial (TBA) and invasive pulmonary aspergillosis (IPA), mainly in lung cancer patients or lung transplant recipients.…”

“…A few species are also recognized as phytopathogens and opportunistic pathogens in insects and animals, including humans [142,143]. M. cirrosus causes cutaneous infection [144], pulmonary infection [145], and fatal invasive infection with fungemia [146]. There are cases of human subcutaneous infection caused by M. ennothomasiorum [147], mycetoma caused by M. gracilis [148], and suppurative cutaneous granulomata caused by M. cinereus [149].…”

“…The family Microascaceae includes genera Microascus and Scopulariopsis , opportunistic fungi that have caused respiratory infection associated with poor outcome and an attributable mortality rate of 85%–100% ( 1 , 2 ). Treatment of invasive Microascus infection is challenging because of its high resistance to available therapies.…”
