Pulmonary metastases from epithelial tumours: late results of surgical treatment☆

Abstract: Resection of epithelial lung metastases allows an acceptable prognostic result in appropriately selected patients with very low perioperative morbidity and mortality. Factors such as high disease-free interval, single metastasis and completeness of resection are demonstrated and confirmed to be significantly associated with long-term survival.

“…The intrathoracic recurrence rate after pulmonary metastasectomy has been reported to be 16-53% by open thoracotomy [16][17][18][19][20][21] and 18-49% by VATS [1][2][3][4][5], showing similar outcomes between these two procedures. In this Mediastinal lymph node recurrence 1 *One case of operation-related death was excluded study, we were unable to conduct a simple comparison because recurrence data were collected retrospectively and patients were not on a prescribed surveillance schedule; yet the intrathoracic recurrence rate was 46.2%, a local control rate similar to those in previous reports.…”

“…Regarding prognosis, a simple comparison cannot be done among reports because of variation with primary tumor site; nonetheless overall 5-year survival rate following pulmonary resection by thoracotomy has been reported to be 30-54% [16][17][18][19][20][21][24][25][26][27]. To date, there are only a few reports on the outcome of VATS for pulmonary metastases.…”

“…According to the presence of three risk factors, namely, completeness of resection, number of metastases, and DFI, the prognostic grouping system proposed by the International Registry of Lung Metastases was supported by others. 5,6 Infl uence of Pulmonary and Mediastinal Lymph Node Involvement Is pulmonary metastasectomy applicable to patients with pulmonary or mediastinal lymph node involvement? Should lymph node dissection be routinely performed along with pulmonary metastasectomy?…”
