Pulmonary Imaging of Immunocompromised Patients during Hematopoietic Stem Cell Transplantation using Non-Contrast-Enhanced Three-Dimensional Ultrashort Echo Time (3D-UTE) MRI

Abstract: Purpose To evaluate the feasibility of non-contrast-enhanced three-dimensional ultrashort echo time (3D-UTE) MRI for pulmonary imaging in immunocompromised patients during hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT). Methods MRI was performed using a stack-of-spirals 3D-UTE sequence (slice thickness: 2.34mm; matrix: 256 × 256; acquisition time: 12.7–17.6 seconds) enabling imaging of the entire thorax within single breath-holds. Patients underwent MRI before HSCT initiation, in the case of peripr… Show more

“…Compared to an approach of UTE MRI in breath-hold maneuver (11), both free-breathing sequences assessed in this study performed similar and tended to be slightly inferior in terms of diagnosing pulmonary pathologies. Diagnostic accuracy for pleural effusions in breath-hold UTE MRI was 98% (vs. 91% for spiral and 89% for radial trajectory free-breathing UTE MRI in this study).…”

“…Second, a prototypical self-navigated (direct current-gated) 3D-UTE sequence exploiting a radial kooshball trajectory (18,19) was acquired in free-breathing, with the following general sequence parameters (11): TE = 0.03 ms; TR = 1.49 ms; flip angle = 2°; non-selective hard pulse duration = 20 µs; FOV = 350 × 350 mm 2 ; nominal resolution = 2.3 × 2.3 × 2.3 mm 3 . Overall, 350,000 projections were acquired during a period of 8.7 min with 256 points on each projection (22,24).…”
