Pulmonary asbestos body counts and electron probe analysis of asbestos body cores in patients with mesothelioma. A study of 25 cases

Abstract: Malignant mesotheliomas of the pleura and peritoneum are well‐recognized risks of asbestos exposure. We determined the asbestos body content of the lungs from 24 cases of malignant mesothelioma (19 pleural, five peritoneal) and compared such to the content of lungs from 50 consecutive adult autopsies and four cases of overt asbestosis using a Clorox‐digestion concentration technique. The cores of 90 asbestos bodies were examined by energy dispersive x‐ray analysis and compared with similar data from 120 standa… Show more

“…The range of values for malignant mesothelioma and pulmonary fibrosis is similar to those reported in other series (Roggli et al, 1982;Roggli and Pratt, 1983;Roggli, 1990). Asbestos bodies were identified in four of the five cases of pulmonary fibrosis, although there was considerable variation in the asbestos fibre counts.…”

“…This is becoming increasingly controversial, as it is now apparent that mesothelioma can develop following a prolonged latent period after low-level or brief exposure (Lanphear and Buncher, 1992). Furthermore, asbestos fibre levels of mesothelioma cases are known to overlap with background levels of the general population (Roggli et al, 1982).…”

“…Hematogenous dissemination to distant organs is an event that rarely becomes clinically evident during the course of the disease. However, distant metastases of pleural MM occur and have been histologically documented in brain, meninges, lymph nodes, liver, kidney, lung, skin, bone, oral cavity, and large intestine [1,[6][7][8][9]. Autopsy studies have demonstrated the presence of distant metastases in up to 50% of patients with MM, including a case with multiple nodules in the skeletal muscles of the extremities [2].…”

“…Types of asbestos fibers were determined using a transmission electronmicroscope with content of metals being analyzed by an x-ray analyzer. The relative peak heights for seven elements: magnesium, silicon, calcium, sodium, manganese, iron, and aluminum were measured for each fiber 9,10) . Values for the relative peakheight percentage of these seven elements were plotted on a Gibbs triangular coordinate diagram.…”
