Pulmonary Artery Banding

Abstract: The technic of banding the pulmonary artery is described. Twenty infants with intractable cardiac failure secondary to interventricular septal defects have had banding with one operative and one late death. The operation is palliative, and definitive surgery probably must be done when the child is 3 to 5 years of age. Banding the pulmonary artery is a relatively safe procedure but the mortality of banding plus ventricular closure and unbanding remains to be evaluated.

“…ventricular septal defect, and subsequently others confirmed the therapeutic value of this procedure in this and allied lesions (Fowler et al, 1958;Morrow and Braunwald, 1961;Albert et al, 1961;Goldblatt et al, 1965). Gammelgaard and his colleagues (1961) found that patients with common atrioventricular canal were not helped by this operation and in Sirak, Hosier, and Clatworthy's series (1959) no patient with this lesion survived banding.…”

“…Noteably among the latter have been those of Howard Sirak, Ẽ ugene BraunNvold,3 and Albert. 4 Recently, the successful total correction of a septal defect with repair of an artificially created pulmonary artery constriction has been reported by Jerome Kay.5…”
