Pulmonary Arterial Hypertension and Therapeutic Interventions

Abstract: Pulmonary hypertension is an uncommon disease that carries a significant morbidity and mortality. Pulmonary arterial hypertension is a subtype of pulmonary hypertension that describes a group of disease entities that lead to an elevation in precapillary pulmonary artery pressure. Despite advances in the diagnosis and treatment of pulmonary arterial hypertension, it remains a difficult disease to recognize and manage. In this review article, we will discuss the definition and diagnosis of pulmonary arterial hyp… Show more

“…The most effective strategy to alleviate PH symptoms is to promote both cGMP and cAMP signalling enhancing vasodilation [ 196 , 198 , 199 ]. While PDE5 inhibitors have been extensively studied for clinical use to treat PH [ 198 , 200 , 201 ], PDE2 has not been comprehensively investigated and only one study demonstrated that PDE2 inhibition may ameliorate PH [ 196 ]. In this study, the authors demonstrated that PDE2 inhibition with BAY60-7550 prevented the onset of both hypoxia- and bleomycin-induced PH.…”

“…Pulmonary hypertension (PH) is a hemodynamic and pathophysiologic condition that comprises heterogeneous disorders, leads to right-heart failure if untreated, and carries substantial morbidity and mortality (1)(2)(3)(4). It is defined as a mean pulmonary arterial pressure exceeding 20 mmHg at rest as assessed by right-heart catheterization (5).…”
