Pulmonary and serum antibody responses elicited in zebu cattle experimentally infected withMycoplasma mycoidessubsp.mycoidesSC by contact exposure

Abstract: -The purpose of the present study was to characterize the Mycoplasma mycoides subsp. mycoides small colony (MmmSC)-specific humoral immune response at both systemic and local levels in cattle experimentally infected with MmmSC, for a better understanding of the protective immune mechanisms against the disease. The disease was experimentally reproduced in zebu cattle by contact. Clinical signs, postmortem and microbiological findings were used to evaluate the degree of infection. Serum and bronchial lavage flui… Show more

“…Putative protective immune mechanisms include the following: (i) production of IFN-γ, which potentiates phagocytic and bactericidal activity of macrophages and stimulates opsonization by bovine neutrophils through its IgG2 promoting effect [12], and (ii) CD4-dependent proliferation of B cells (this study). Interestingly, IgA levels in bronchial lavage fluids have recently been correlated with reduced severity of CBPP [18]. Additionally, we have described for the first time two phenotypes of MmmSC-specific memory CD4…”

“…Nonetheless, the c-ELISA seems to be more sensitive than the CFT in detecting chronic and subacute cases during experiments and in endemic areas (Niang et al 2006;Sidibé et al 2012). It is important to note that like any serological test, c-ELISA tests have limitations since they do not differentiate postinfection antibodies from postvaccination antibodies.…”

“…The SC route of inoculation was used on the grounds of expediency (Davies et al 1968) but was discouraged due to doubts as to whether the results gave an accurate assessment of immunity. In-contact transmission method was later used extensively (Huebschle et al 2006;Niang et al 2006;Hamsten et al 2010;Totté et al 2010) because it approximates more closely to a natural infection (Provost et al 1987). However, the method employs an extra group of animals whose only role is to serve as donors of infective material, making it more expensive.…”
