“…The present study found that ingestion of a puerarin diet ameliorated the OVXinduced elevations of serum glucose levels, body weight, and white adipose tissue weight in a similar manner to the PVEE diet (Tables 3 and 4). These data were consistent with those of a recent study showing that puerarin (100 and 200 mg·kg 21 body weight) suppressed weight gain in rats fed a high-fat diet (19). Therefore, the glucose metabolism-improving actions of PVEE were most likely due to puerarin, rather than other minor isoflavones, although further studies for the effective dosage might be needed.…”

“…Materials were originally ground to a fine powder by a micronizer and prepared as tablet, which were authenticated and standardized on the basis of marker compounds in the Chinese Pharmacopoeia 2010 [39]. Several groups of monomer with special biological activities were extracted from each single component, for example, attenuating pulmonary fibrosis of PN extract [40], lowering plasma cholesterol of Hawthorn extract [41], improving insulin resistance of Puerarin extract [42], and attenuating idiopathic edema of radix Aucklandiae extract [43]. According to the theory of TCM, Salvia miltiorrhiza Bunge was looked on as a kind of “principal drug”, Panax notoginseng as “ministerial drug”, and the other 3 components served as “adjunctive drug” among components of XKS [44].…”

“…Moreover, puerarin restored the impaired glucose-stimulated insulin secretion, thus protecting b-cell function. Besides the beneficial effects on ameliorating insulin resistance reported by other researchers (Hsu et al 2003, Zhang et al 2010, we found that puerarin could act directly on pancreatic b-cells, maintaining the b-cell mass and insulin secretion. Pancreatic islets are vulnerable to the oxidative stress and puerarin could sufficiently inhibit the hydrogen peroxide-induced b-cell apoptosis (Xiong et al 2006).…”
