Puddling Intensity for Late-season Sawah Systems Based on Soil Hydrophysical Conditions and Rice Performance

Abstract: Lowland sawah farmers often puddle to improve soil hydrophysical conditions for rice, but the puddling intensity beyond which no extra yield increases occur is unknown. Agronomic effects of six mechanical puddling intensities were assessed in three Nigerian inland-valley bottoms. All puddled plots, irrespective of intensity, produced similar effects at all three locations. At 10 days after transplanting, soil bulk density of all puddled plots represented mean decreases relative to control plots of about 22.4, … Show more

“…Textural classes were clay loam to sand (OGB1), clay loam to sandy clay loam (OGB2) and clay loam to sandy loam (OGB3). The varied textures of lowland soils have been related to parent material and topographic position (Akamigbo, 2001;Nwite et al, 2012;Obalum et al, 2014;Kefas et al, 2016;Obalum and Chibuike, 2017). At OGB1, parent materials were dominantly total sand which was higher in the pedon with average values of 57% and clay fractions were lowest.…”

“…Recent development in economic diversification which emphasised agribusiness in Nigeria portends movement towards application of intensive farm labour. The need for massive production of rice and other domestically grown agricultural products means that large farm lands must be used (Obalum et al,2014), which also has an implication on farm power. There is massive involvement of both rural and urban Nigerians in agriculture in the last 3-4 years (IITA, 2018).…”

“…It promotes the efficiency of soil and water management; conserves the fertility of lowland soils (nutrient-rich fine particles in the saturated puddled soils, alluvial flows and geo-and topo-accumulated water settle and build-up in the topsoil) and makes for proper harnessing of water and nutrients in the lowlands (Asubonteng et al, 2001;Wakatsuki and Masunaga, 2005). Considering that rice is a shallowrooting and water-loving grain crop, this improved environment for crop growth offered by lowland sawah often results in increased tillering potential and grain yield of rice (Obalum et al, 2014). For non-sawah fields (with uncontrolled flooding), these sediments elude the topsoil with the attendant hampering of rice growth and yield.…”

“…Focusing on sawah-grown rice, there have also been reports of poor agronomic performance due to ineffective water control and inadequate water retention in sawah basins (Obalum et al, 2014). Lowland soil fertility cannot be effectively restored without compatible water control and management techniques.…”
