“…The FM ground state can also be demonstrated by the isothermal magnetization M(H) shown in Fig. 1b measured at 2 K. The low coercive field indicates a soft ferromagnetism in Fe 5 GeTe 2 , which is similar as that of Fe 3 GeTe 2 29,30 . The saturation magnetic moment along the c-axis is about 2.4 μ B /Fe, likely unveiling the magnetic anisotropy at low temperature.…”

“…The previous comprehensive study reached a conclusion that the critical exponent β for a 2D magnets lies in the range of ~ 0.1 ≤ β ≤ 0.25 44 . It is apparent that the β values of Cr 2 Si 2 Te 6 and Cr 2 Ge 2 Te 6 , which were verified as 2D Ising magnets 45,46 , are actually within the window, while those of Fe 3-x GeTe 2 and Fe 5 GeTe 2 are apparently larger than 0.25, thus excluding www.nature.com/scientificreports/ the 2D Ising model for them 29,30 . Moreover, the γ values of Fe 3-x GeTe 2 and Fe 5 GeTe 2 are much larger than those for the tricritical mean-field and 3D Ising models 38,39 , suggesting the two models are not appropriate.…”

“…25 The average crystal structure and x-ray diffraction (XRD) of single and crushed crystals were reported in our previous paper. 32 Figure 1 shows the normalized Fe K-edge XANES spectra and Fourier transform magnitudes of EXAFS spectra of Fe 3−x GeTe 2 obtained at room temperature. The typical features of near edge are marked as A, B, C, and D [ Fig.…”

“…Single crystals of Fe 3−x GeTe 2 were grown by the flux method. 32 The stoichiometry was measured by examination of multiple points using x-ray energy-dispersive spectroscopy (EDS) with a JEOL LSM-6500 scanning electron microscope (SEM). The x-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) measurements were performed at 8-ID beamline of the National Synchrotron Light Source II (NSLS II) at Brookhaven National Laboratory (BNL) in the transmission mode.…”

“…The coupling between adjacent sheets seems to depend sensitively on temperature, chemical composition, lattice parameters, etc., 9,10 leading to a complex magnetic behavior that is readily tuned by its environment. For example, the perpendicular magnetic anisotropy depends sensitively on the chemical environment and tensile strain.…”
