Public web-based services from the European Bioinformatics Institute

Abstract: The mission of the European Bioinformatics Institute (EBI), an outstation of the European Molecular Biology Laboratory (EMBL) in Heidelberg, is to ensure that the growing body of information from molecular biology and genome research is placed in the public domain and is accessible freely to all parts of the scientific community in ways that promote scientific progress. To fulfil this mission, the EBI provides a wide variety of free, publicly available bioinformatics services. These can be divided into data su… Show more

“…Unique accession codes were parsed and used to retrieve corresponding cross-referenced mRNA accession codes from EMBL [ 19 ], when present. Parsed IDs were screened to remove repeated entries, references to whole genomes/chromosomes or invalid entries, and subsequently used to retrieve corresponding FASTA sequences through the EBI Dbfetch service [ 20 ]. Sequences longer than 65,535 or shorter than 80 letters were excluded to avoid software incompatibility.…”

“…We plan to use the existing database structures to house data for new sections of the IPD project as they become available. The files will also be made available in different formats for downloading from the website, and ftp server, and the data will be included in SRS, BLAST and FASTA search engines at the European Bioinformatics Institute (20). …”

“…The user is also able to perform queries for particular HLA alleles; the output provides access to detailed information on any HLA allele, including information on the ethnic origin of the source, database cross-references and seminal publications. This information is also available through integration with the Sequence Retrieval System (SRS) service at EBI (37).
