Public understanding of environment and bioenergy resources

Abstract: There exists a distinct disconnect between scientists’ perception of nature and people’s worldview. This ‘disconnect’ though has dialectical relationship with science communication processes which, causes impediments in the propagation of scientific ideas. Those ideas, which are placed at large cultural distance, do not easily become a part of cognitive structure of a common citizen or peoples thought complex. Low level of public understanding of bio-energy technologies is one such sphere of understanding. The… Show more

“…When asked about biomass-based fuels vs. gasoline choice at gas stations, convenience and availability of biofuels at most filling stations and price of biofuels vs. gasoline are reported as important to consumers governing their choice of biofuels [4,6,7,21,25,26,[30][31][32][33][34].…”

“…However, the closed-ended questions mainly consisted of the dichotomous type where the respondents had two options (Yes or No). A similar scaling frame was also adopted in analyzing public knowledge and perception in other studies [18][19][20][21][22][23]. The information obtained from the IFS officers was processed and analyzed with the statistical package SPSS version 19.0.…”

“…Forestry experts' opinions are considered as an important element for bioenergy development in many developed and developing countries [17][18][19][20][21][22]. Hence, the IFS officers were asked a set of questions related to the local people's attitudes towards bioenergy promotion ( Table 7).…”

“…An intensification of the management of existing forest resources, enhancement of afforestation programmes on both private and government lands by the planting of appropriate SRF species, coupled with governmental priorities on the implementation of forestry sectoral plans and programmes are considered important interventions, which could bridge the gap between supply and demand of wood fuels and, eventually, promote future sustainable wood fuel supplies to rural households (MoEF 1992;Miah et al 2010). In addition, the introduction of bioenergy related course curriculum at different institutional levels, the introduction of an adult learning programme on the environment, and the dissemination of information and technology on bioenergy through the mass media could be worthwhile interventions in the promotion of public knowledge, awareness and perceptions of bioenergy and other renewables (Islam and Islam 2005;Raza et al 2011). However, in regard to current energy dynamics (i.e.…”
